The foyer opens up as you enter the home. The double height (26 feet high at the peak!) entry hall floods the space with light and the custom railing by Matthew Tilton adds the pizzazz! The entire home has silent in-floor radiant heat, and most rooms have a thermostat for temperature control. There are three air handlers for air-conditioning and there is a cooling thermostat on each floor....
As you turn to the right there is this cozy niche with a western outlook, the perfect spot to enjoy a glass of wine and watch the evening news.
But, when you turn to the south....well, this is the money shot as they say. Stem to stern fabulousness. Who needs a TV screen when you have this to look at! The soffits above contain A/C and motorized blinds. The glass in these windows is low-e, and tinted to remove heat and light gain. Ceiling height on the main floor is a generous 10-12 feet...
This home, and the main floor specifically, was designed with entertaining in mind. There are 12 spotlights in the ceiling that point down to the 12 seats at this oval table...(in fact, there is a whole home Lightolier Control system where multiple scenes can be programmed per room, floor or whole house). The glass art walls were commissioned & designed by Seattle glass artist, Gary Newcomb, and provide a playful and fun backdrop that is edge lit from above to maximize the surface texture. Notice the curved built-in buffet and art niche in this space.
Seated at the dining table, this is your view....There is a sliding door that leads to an deck straight ahead, to the left you can peek into the formal kitchen and off to the left is the main living room (not in the photo).
Here you are in the "formal kitchen". There is a cooktop here, a sink, breakfast bar, toaster and microwave closet, eat-in table, access to the outdoor table/deck and plenty of storage. The kitchen cabinets are made from exotic African lacewood, and lift upwards to provide easy access to plates and glassware. Granite counters also make wonderful serving areas when entertaining. Walls of windows simply bring in this iconic vista all along the southern wall of this home. Completely enclosed for privacy & security. This is the beautiful gate that will greet you as you enter on Ward Street. Love the backlit address plate. You can "buzz" your guests in from inside the the home or, there is a front-door webcam that is available via a mobile phone app. This home was completed in 2002 by Schultz Miller. An fun fact is that this location was selected the Asa Mercer (1839-1917) to build a home on for his daughters. Mercer was the first president of the University of Washington and a member of the Washington State Senate. A little bit of history is always interesting!
